abilities & skills
As a mermaid, Opal has the lower body of a fish, gills behind her ears and lives in water. She is able to breath underwater due to this. As a mermaid Opal is able to swim great distances at speed, much like whales do
In the water Opal can communicate with other sea creatures to a degree, she has minor control over some currents, but not enough to cause great change. She can also lure unsuspecting sailors or humans towards the water to drown them if she's feeling a little feisty.
LEGS FOR DAYS
On land, Opal's lower body forms into two legs, allowing her to cross land by foot. In human form, Opal retains her gills, easily hidden behind her hair from prying eyes. Due to the ocean being her natural home, Opal is only able to stay on land for a few hours at a time. Over the last year or so, Opal has extended her time to four hours out of water before she needs to soak herself in sea water. Longer than that and Opal begins to dehydrate, her skin dries and pushing those limits would result in death.
As a human, Opal has no magical ability, other than a small resistance to some spells.
into the past
Opal was born somewhere in the middle of her siblings, honestly, she doesn't keep track of who is older and younger than who, all she knows is that Storm is the baby (literally, the little guppy hasn't even developed his fins properly). Most mers spend their younger years in and around Atlantis, the connections within their species is very complicated and half the time Opal isn't sure who the hell is who -when she was younger she named mers by their fins and colours, with the exception of few friends who would get their actual name.
Opal's first encounter with the human world was when she was twelve, Shark Tail and Blue Belly (two merfolk from her school) dared her to break surface near a few fishing boats, Opal was wilful and arrogant, so she did it. She was horrified when she saw just what those boats were doing. For all the good it did, Opal split two fishing nets with a rough shell, ruining the haul of those vessels although she later discovered that it was a futile act, since they just repaired or replaced the nets and returned.
THE SURFACE & KALAN
It coloured a lot of Opal's feelings towards humans for a while, she took to watching for ships or boats and attempting to foil or ruin their intended goals while they were out. It lasted until a long haul cruise ship crossed over, Opal curious about the size, got caught up in the current from the ships engines and got her tail sliced on the propellers. Opal was a little more shy about venturing to the surface afterwards.
Some of her faith was restored during a battle she had with seal hunters; what Opal thought was a human driving off some hunters, enough that she started to befriend him, only to discover that he wasn't entirely human either. While he wasn't human, it did help to ease some of Opal's misgivings, being that some people clearly cared for the ocean and the beings there too.
EXPECTATIONS AND BETROTHAL
For a while, with her father freaking out about the injury, Opal stayed close to home, mostly pestering people, calling them out on their nonsense and sparking a fuss in the merfolk law system. She wasn't looking to be married off to some merman she didn't know or like (Opal liked very few of the mermen around her age and in their community reef, since they were mostly buttfaces) and detested the idea that she couldn't choose for herself. Coral had already been joined with her chosen for upwards of a year by that point, and Opal used that to highlight she could do better on her own. (Coral could've done much better than Puke Scales in Opal's opinion, probably everyone's opinion, but didn't get the choice.) Opal was not playing that game.
It caused a bit of a division between she and her father, although Isle and River appreciated that Opal was being the stubborn one since neither of them were all too keen on the idea either. As a result, and thanks to Azen's position of moderate power in Atlantis, Opal was excused from her traditional joining at 18. She's been putting it off ever since, partially successful because honestly, no one is entirely keen on making her do anything she doesn't want to and her current betrothed knows she'll be difficult.
But Opal was easily bored, and travelling all over the ocean would only do her so much good. She boasts winning two fights with sharks, out swimming one (because it was dumb) and visiting a few wrecks. But those are boring too.
Eventually, Kai convinced Opal to go with him to land, a harbour that he'd heard was friendly to their kind. In a bid to prove she wasn't afraid, Opal went, and they discovered Dockside. Finding out more about the humans in general became something Opal busied herself with. Since it stopped her arguing with her father's plans for her future, it was permitted, although his patience is running out with Opal and her unwillingness to settle in the ocean with her betrothed (she doesn't really like Guppy Butt that much).
Opal's worked up to the point where she can spend up to four hours out of the water. She usually spends the latter end of those four hours near Dockside, since she knows it's a fairly safe place and the regulars there who are aware of what she is don't kick up a fuss.
Seattle isn't a place you spend time in lightly; it's a hub of supernatural drama, with so much despair and drama almost constantly converging there with the large supernatural population. But there's also plenty to keep a person there.
Opal's built up friendships within the werewolf pack, usually through Dockside, and finds the Alpha of Seattle to be a delightful and friendly wolf, she's starting to learn more about humans and their world and getting tingly feelings for people that she chooses to get them for. All in all, even with the trauma that Seattle can sometimes bring, Opal is very taken with the area.
Opal and Kalan made friends years ago, they continually meet around the world, now that's brought Kalan to Seattle, Opal is looking forward to getting to know him better.
» Opal is not one of those mermaids who fashioned a modesty garment for herself. While the human world is interesting and she enjoys having legs from time to time to navigate it, she separates her human existence from her mer-existence by not comparing the two. As such, in her fish form she does not cover her torso -she has a spine fin, it's difficult to keep clam-shells on her boobs. As a result, even in human form she's lacking in modesty and doesn't have any issue with nudity.
» While in her mer-form, Opal has a tail similar to that of a koi-fish; it's soft orange and white, with a luminescent white underbelly, burnt orange dorsal fin and matching double sword tail. Looks like this basically.
» Somewhat self-conscious about the webbing between her toes, she tends to wear enclosed shoes when she's walking around, even if they are just weaved sandals. Refuses to wear anything with a toe-separator. Doesn't paint her toe nails ever.
» Spends a lot of time on hair care, it's a big deal. It tends not to be an issue if she's staying in the water for long periods of time, but above water is a different thing all together. If she's intending on spending the day mostly on land, there's a procedure for hair before she'll do anything. It's exhausting, but her vanity doesn't allow anything else.
» Gave herself a surname, just because. She liked the way it sounded and the allusion to her true form. It's pronounced 'oh SEE ahn'.
» Has a scar running along the back of both her calves from where her tail was sliced by a ships propeller. It's smooth but there's a hint of her tails colour comes through along the line of scar tissue while she has legs. The recent nightmares through Seattle resulted in further marks along Opal's legs from the dreams.
» Has four sisters and three brothers. Has no idea how old they all are, sometimes forgets what their names are and just calls them by another name. Only knows that Storm is the youngest (and is a boy) and that Kai is older than her, but not the oldest (also a boy). Hasn't learned her eldest sister's partners name; calls him Puke Scales
» Was gifted with special Atlantean conch shells by King Vernitus to help her communicate with her land bound friends while she's in the ocean. She's given one to Nate, and one to Paul. Her own has a link directly to the King.
HOME FROM HOME
» After weeks and weeks of transferring jewels from the ocean and old ship wrecks, Opal finally had enough human money to buy herself a small hut on the beach. It's cosy and minimal, but close to the water and what Opal needs to make sure she's got a place near the water.
